This presentation starts with defining risk terms and providing reasons to manage them: Risk, Issue, Opportunity, Risk Response, Risk Mitigation, and Issue Contingency. Risk management is presented, which includes risk planning and identifying and writing risks in terms of: Cause, Probability of Occurrence, and Consequence.

Also included is the identification of root causes of risks, risk analysis, risk prioritization, risk exposure, risk response, risk priorities, risk mitigation, risk triggers, risk avoidance, risk monitoring and control, and potential acceptance of the risk or issue. When risks are realized they become issue and issue contingencies and possible issue acceptance is presented. Also discussed is escalation or transfer of risks and issues, as risks or issues may belong to a different organizations or entities that may be better able to respond.

Al Florence has been employed at major technology firms: Shell Oil, Hughes Aircraft, TRW, Martin Marietta, SAIC, and MITRE. He has been involved in all phases of the life cycle, from concept to retirement, in different disciplines as a developer and manager including: geophysics, software, systems, test, configuration management, quality assurance, risks management, metrics, IV&V, process improvement and others. His clients have included: Army, Navy, Air Force, Missile Defense Agency, NASA, DISA, IRS, FBI, INS, FAA, CIA, Customs, DOE, VA, Health and Human Services, Centers for Medicare and Medicade Services, the Department of Homeland Security, and others. He has been involved in diversified projects: oil exploration, spacecraft, aircraft, missiles, weapon systems, particle accelerators, and information systems, and in technical and programmatic process reengineering. He has made over 100 technical presentations at national and international conferences and has several publications in technical journals. Mr. Florence has vast experience with CMMI processes and is a certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt.
