Leadership and Career Development
by: Joseph Ludford
Tuesday September 24, 2013
Leadership is a skill that all professionals need for career success. It is not given at birth, but rather comes to us through socialization, family influence, education, experience, and personal development. We are leaders or followers depending on the situation. Sometimes we are chosen, and sometimes we assume the role. And we vary with respect to when we will lead or follow. Basic behavior characteristics and underlying personality traits of leaders will be presented. The need to pursue opportunities for leadership experience will be explained. Corporate and military leadership development will be compared. Personal impediments to leadership behavior will be explained. The point will be made that it is up to individuals to prepare themselves for leadership in their careers by looking upward and figuring out what leaders and followers are doing in the organization.
Joseph Ludford is a retired engineer and has been an adjunct instructor at Prince George’s Community College in Maryland. He began his career as an Air Force Officer at the Rome Air Development Center in New York State, and completed it 48 years later after working as a systems engineer and quality manager at several profit and non-profit aerospace and defense organizations in the Washington, DC area. He has engineering degrees from Manhattan College in New York and Syracuse University, and a management science degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He also attended Georgetown Law Center in Washington, DC. Mr. Ludford is a Senior Member of the American Society for Quality and is Past Chair and Past Education Chair of Section 0509 in the Washington, DC-Maryland Metro Area. He has five quality related certifications from ASQ and one certification in configuration management from the National Defense Industrial Association. He has a Professional Engineer registration in New York State.
