Driving directions: By Cars: From I-270 (N or S bound): Take Exit 9A and exit from the FIRST right exit; turn left (east) onto Shady Grove Dr.; turn right (south) onto Rockville Pike (Route 355); turn left (east) onto East Gude Dr.; turn left (north) immediately onto Crabb’s Branch Dr.; turn left (west) immediately onto Standish Place. The first building on your right side is 7519 Standish Place; open parking). The venue is on the first floor of 7529 Building with its external entrance opposite to the left side of 7519 building main entrance. By Metro trains: Off from Red Line Shady Grove Station, and take RideOn Route 59 TOWARD ROCKVILLE and get off from “Calhoun Place” stop. Standish Place is next to the Bus stop. Our venue is within 2 min of walking distance from the stop.

Summary 

Our speaker will present a personal reflection of how to mix up a career professional engineer with social conscience to become a “socially conscientious engineer.”  It is important for an engineer to combine technical know-how, financial acumen, and communication skills to be successful.  During his five year term of being the Office Manager of Gannett Fleming, the speaker was able to turn a not-profitable regional office of 35 to the most profitable business unit of Gannett Fleming of 75 staff.  Our speaker will give some tips on his secret formula for a successful business.  He will also try to show that in addition to a successful career, life would be more fulfilled to make oneself a socially conscientious engineer.

Speaker’s Bio: 

Dr. Chen-Yu Yen joined Gannett Fleming Inc. (GF), a national consulting engineering firm, in 1985, and is now Vice President of the company. Dr. Yen is also the President and Chief Executive Officer of TerraSure Development, LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of GF Affliates that specializes in guaranteed fixed price remediation and redevelopment of hazardous waste contaminated sites.  He is also Senior Vice President of Gannett Fleming Sustainable Ventures Corporation.  He has a patent in chemically assisted biological in-situ treatment of hexa-valent chromium contaminated soil and groundwater.  He also publishes Invest with Yen, a quarterly investment advisory newsletter since 1996 with a subscription fee of paying forward to a worthy cause of the subscriber’s own choice.  

Dr. Yen currently serves as a board director for the Gillings Global School of Public Health at UNC Chapel Hill and as an advisory committee member for the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering at the Johns Hopkins University at Baltimore, Maryland.  Recently, he has agreed to join the board of directors for the Chinese Culture and Community Center (CCACC) at Gaithersburg, MD.

Dr. Yen received his bachelor degree in Chemistry from National Taiwan University, his master degree in Chemistry, and his PhD degree in Environmental Sciences and Engineering from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  He is a registered professional engineer in MD and PA.
