Summary
The HHS Entrepreneurs-in-Residence (EIR) Program, run by HHS IDEA Lab, brings entrepreneurs and innovators from outside of government to complete a 13-month tour of duty at HHS.  EIRs, who are passionate and seasoned innovators looking to use their skills for good, join a talented internal team and bring new ideas and approaches to tackle complex challenges in health, healthcare, and the delivery of human services.

Since 2012, the program has hired 21 EIRs to work with 53 internal staff on 15 projects across HHS, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).  Projects have focused on four major areas: IT modernization, data science, human-centered design, and process improvement.  Approximately 50% of EIRs are asked to stay on past their initial 13-month term.  Challenges and success stories based on the EIR program experience will be discussed.
