Achieving software quality through ISO/IEC/IEEE standards.
The most significant change in the software engineering landscape since the release of ISO 9001:2015 will be the major revision of ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207, Systems and software engineering—Software life cycle processes, expected later in 2017. This revision affects the QM and QA processes and the changes in how quality is built in with agile methods. Meanwhile, revisions of the longtime SQuaRE series (ISO/IEC 25000) of standards also reflect an interest in keeping standards current with the needs of software engineering groups and their stakeholders. This review of the standards landscape for software quality focuses on what has changed—and what's on the horizon for newer trends like DevOps.
Dr. Annette Reilly is a four-time winner of IEEE-CS Outstanding Contribution awards for her leadership and development work in systems and software engineering standards. For over 15 years, Dr. Reilly has led the development and harmonization of IEEE and ISO/IEC standards for systems and software engineering, software user documentation, and IT service management. She is now the IEEE Computer Society Representative to ISO/IEC JTC 1 committees on systems and software engineering, IT governance and IT service management, and instructions for use, a member of the IEEE-CS Standards Activity Board and the IEEE Standards Association Standards Board, and co-editor of ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207, Systems and software engineering—Software Life Cycle Processes.
Before Dr. Reilly retired from Lockheed Martin, she held a variety of roles for proposal management, engineering management, systems engineering, information management, and technical documentation. She received a B.A. from Rice University, a Ph.D. from Brandeis University, and an MIS from The George Washington University.
