What do cyber-physical systems, data science, and Industry 4.0 have in common?

ISO 9001:2015 paragraph 3.1.5 defines quality as the “totality of characteristics of an entity that bear upon its ability to satisfy stated and implied needs.” An entity can be a person or an organization, a process, a project, a product, or (since machine learning in intelligent agents is becoming more widespread) a proxy that makes decisions and takes actions on a user’s behalf.

Using this definition, innovation can be thought of as finding and defining the characteristics of those entities that will satisfy future needs – a perspective that aligns with ASQ’s description of innovation as “quality for tomorrow.” This presentation explores innovation and technological transformation from the Industrial Revolution to present -- through the lens of quality – to help you identify opportunities for innovation related to developing systems and software.

Nicole Radziwill is an Associate Professor of Integrated Science and Technology (ISAT) at James Madison University (JMU). She is a Fellow of the American Society for Quality (ASQ), a Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB), Certified Manager of Quality and Operational Excellence (CMQ/OE), and one of ASQs Influential Voices (http://qualityand innovation.com).
