Presentation Summary: This presentation will explain the current regulatory procedures for FDA clearance of bioengineered plants used for food and feed. It will also cover the other U.S. Agency involvement in the process and touch on the international scene and how what the U.S. is doing regulatory wise fits in with the rest of the world.
Speaker's Biography: Dr. Price is the Special Assistant (Plant Biotechnology) to the Director, Division of Animal Feeds, Office of Surveillance and Compliance, CVM, FDA. He is responsible to plan, manage, organize, and direct the Feeds derived from Biotech Plant program which involves collaboration with multiple centers and Offices within FDA, USDA/APHIS, EPA, OECD and others on a routine basis to formulate policy, coordinate programs, and to harmonize FDA and US policy. The program also involves planning and implementing symposia and publishing papers on scientific and regulatory issues associated with the program. He has successfully managed the feed part of Biotech Notification Program in collaboration with CFSAN of FDA which is responsible for the food part of the program. Dr Price has been the major author or co-author on four crop composition consensus documents for OECD and a major contributor to five others. He currently has two more consensus documents in progress and is editing and contributing to three others. Dr Price holds a B.S. from Michigan State University, a MS and a PhD in Animal Nutrition from Purdue University and a Certificate in Mathematical Statistician from the USDA Graduate School. He is a Diplomat of the American College of Animal Nutrition, and a member of the American Society of Animal Science. He is the President of the Washington DC Chapter of the American Registry of Professional Animal Scientists (ARPAS).
