Knowledge Extraction and Analysis of

Software Systems for Modernization

and Risk Management

by: Mike Oara and Rama Moorthy

Tuesday October 23, 2012

CIOs continue to claim their primary problem is risk management of operational systems, including legacy systems. In order to address these issues, extracting comprehensive system knowledge and analyzing it is mandatory.  Software systems are dynamic and are built using heterogeneous language sets. Software analysis requires the handling of multi-language-based systems with continuous changes.  Whether for functional, security, or compliance requirements, the extracted system knowledge must meet the needs of transparency and traceability.  These needs benefit both software modernization, maintenance, and risk management activities.  Industry and international standards organizations (OMG, ISO, W3C) took this problem head on, resulting in the development of a number of interoperable standards, enabling a systematic systems engineering approach to comprehensive software extraction and analysis.  This advanced analysis generates an unprecedented amount of system data to be managed.  The speakers will present these standards and demonstrate their use to deliver software system transparency and traceability.

Rama Moorthy has 20+ years of experience in the high-tech industry delivering products, services and strategies. At Hatha Systems, along with her role as CEO, she supports the Assistant Secretary of Defense of Network and Information Integration Globalization Task Force leadership on software assurance and supply chain risk management. She is a principal author of the NDIA Engineering for System Assurance Guidebook and is supporting the CIOs office in the development of supply chain risk management guidance.  Ms. Moorthy earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University and a Masters in Business Administration (Marketing and Finance) from Vanderbilt University's Owen Graduate School of Management.

Mike Oara is one of the few veterans of the new discipline of Application Modernization. Mike started his research in the area of application modernization in the early 90s, while working at Seer Technologies, a joint venture of First Boston and IBM. He developed one of the worlds first Function Point Analyzers and tools for bringing COBOL applications into the world of CASE technology. He pioneered new solutions for business rule extraction, creating robust and practical extraction methodologies. At Hatha Systems he is responsible for the delivery of third-generation modernization solutions. Mike has a MS in Mathematics from the University of Bucharest and is an accomplished presenter and author of multiple articles.
