ASQ Section 509 is pleased to offer a refresher course for quality professionals who want to prepare for the Software Quality Engineer Certification Exam administered semiannually by the American Society for Quality.  The course will review the seven topic areas of the CSQE Body of Knowledge and their practical application in Lean and Agile software environments. Students will be given sample exam questions to help identify topic areas of concentration in preparation for the exam. The course will review levels of cognition and their use in defining the intended complexity of multiple choice test questions.

Dates and Times: The course will consist of eight 3-hour sessions (24 classroom hours) on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Actual class dates are:
  • October 2, 9, 16, 23, 30
  • November 6, 13, 20
Instructor: Ray Miller, ASQ Section 509.

Ray Miller is a veteran technologist with extensive and specialized experience supporting business and IT leadership to ensure that a) IT is aligned with business strategy and objectives, and b) products and services are trustworthy, compliant and function as intended. Over the past two decades, Ray has worked with major consultancies, system integrators 
and boutique firms in the role of Project Manager and/or Subject Matter Expert supporting military and federal agencies to:
  • Formulate quality strategies and measures to support business and IT goals.
  • Plan, monitor and control project resources, scope, timelines and risks to ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Apply Agile, Lean, and Six Sigma techniques to maximize product effectiveness and product development efficiencies.
  • Evaluate work products at various life cycle stages to ascertain conformance with specifications.
  • Conduct system, process, product and compliance audits to assess the adequacy and effectiveness of IT and related controls.
  • Mentor and train clients and team members in best practices to foster a culture of quality.
Ray�s validated knowledge of key IT standards, models and frameworks include CMMI, ISO, PMBoK, ITIL, COBIT, TOGAF and NIST. In addition to ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE), Certified Software Quality Engineer (CSQE) and Certified Quality Auditor (CQA) designations, Ray is a Senior Member of ASQ and a Silver Member of the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA).

Course Approach: Each class will include a review of the assigned Primer Section reading in the CSQE Body of Knowledge, and discussion of key concepts with an emphasis on practical application in Lean and Agile software environments.  Test questions will be reviewed and discussed. Students are encouraged to identify areas of special emphasis in their reading and test question work.

Course Materials
CSQE certification materials from the Quality Council of Indiana (http://www.qualitycouncil.com/csqe_p.asp) will be utilized. Please bring the required materials to the first class session:

ASQ CSQE Exam Information: 

Exam Date: December 7, 2013.  Application deadline is October 18, 2013.  Late registration with additional fee deadline is October 23, 2013.

Exam Location: Maryland suburbs of Washington D.C. Applicants will be notified of location and time by National ASQ. 

Exam Application: You must apply for the exam directly with National ASQ (http://prdweb.asq.org/certification/control/software-quality-engineer/apply)

CSQE Exam Cost: $419 for non-members, $269 for members.  Join ASQ and save!  Exam applicants are responsible for meeting ASQ�s certification requirements. 

Recertification: ASQ requires recertification as a Software Quality Engineer every three years either by documenting RU credits or by testing.
